Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".

The former Harvard president, who once presided over Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it understood his choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after the two houses of Congress agreed on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its records on the case.

The legislation will afterward move to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has indicated he expects to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following pressure from his followers.

A group of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages revealed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to influential global figures.

After the emails were shared with the general audience, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and repair connections with the individuals most important to me".

Professional History

Summers held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that he was not associated with the organization.

Summers entered the leadership of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO the company leader.
