A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The top offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which runs restaurants domestically and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna heralds fortune," stated the business owner, a notable figure at the traditional first sale.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is famous for placing substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated rapidly."

This new purchase tops his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.

The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the winner's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year begins," shared one satisfied patron.
