The Mystery Within the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

Heads Up: This article contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter is detailed in the theatrical production the prequel play.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
