The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
